Boho braids: a guide to the trendy hairstyle

Boho braids are a popular and stylish protective hairstyle that blends traditional braids with a carefree, natural aesthetic. They are also known as goddess braids or gypsy braids

Prepare to save all these stunning styles and variations!

Boho braids embody a laid-back and effortless vibe within the braid family. They consist of individual braids that incorporate curly or wavy hair throughout their lengths, creating a deliberately ‘undone’ appearance. Unlike goddess braids or pick-and-drop styles, boho braids integrate wavy strands higher up the braid, while the other styles typically reserve the waves for the ends. However, many people use the terms boho and goddess braids interchangeably, as those familiar with braiding know that terminology can be flexible. This is why inspiration images are crucial, and fortunately, we have compiled an extensive collection for you to explore.

Before diving into those visuals, we consulted Deborah Johnson, co-owner of SIMPLY Gorgeous Afro Hair Salon in London, to gather essential insights about boho braids.

How are boho braids created?

Creating boho braids, you braid to your desired length—around the crown, ear, or chin—and then incorporate curly or wavy hair at one or more points along the braid. The final look, which varies based on the amount of curly or wavy hair used, results in a fuller and more voluminous style.”

Understanding the logistics of boho braids

Hair required: “Since human hair can be quite pricey, we recommend using synthetic hair for the main braid and opting for human hair for the feed-in wavy sections. Human hair generally provides a more natural appearance for the wavy finish.”

Time commitment: “The time needed can vary based on how full you want the final look. For us, the process typically takes between 3 to 6 hours, depending on the thickness of the braids.”

Cost: “Pricing varies by salon, but we usually charge between £110 and £200, depending on the desired thickness and length.”

How long have boho braids been in vogue?

Deborah: “Determining the exact origins of this hairstyle is challenging, as it has been documented in diverse cultures, including the Fula Tribe in Western Africa, Ancient Egypt, and various Native American Tribes. However, we have certainly noticed an increase in requests for this style at our salon since around 2018.”

Tips for maintaining boho braids and avoiding tangles

“We always recommend not keeping any protective style in for more than 8 weeks to ensure the health of your hair. To extend the lifespan of your boho braids, make sure to wrap them up or braid them loosely before bedtime to minimize friction that can cause tangling. Once a week, dampen the braids and apply a leave-in conditioner or oil, then gently comb through with a wide-tooth comb to separate the strands and allow them to air dry.”

Ryan Destiny is a frequently referenced image among clients visiting Deborah’s salon. Her iconic boho braids are waist-length, fluffy, understated, and exude a cool-girl vibe. The transition from the braids to the loose hair is nearly seamless, creating the illusion of one continuous flow of hair.

Small to medium boho braids present a distinct appearance when styled this length. With numerous curly strands woven throughout the braids, they enhance the overall density, resulting in a full, luxurious look.

Corkscrew curl boho braids

While looser curls or waves are often favored, actress Marsai Martin has opted for stunning corkscrew curl extensions, which alter the overall effect and create the illusion that it could be her natural hair. Although we know it isn’t, our minds are more inclined to accept it.

There are no strict guidelines regarding color. If you’re looking to make a subtle change without going too bold, consider choosing a different shade for the curly sections. Lighter colors tend to work best, as they provide a sun-kissed appearance to the curls.

Subtle Boho Braids

Once again, we have Ryan showcasing her talent. Here, only a few minimal strands of curly hair have been added in small sections, resulting in a beautifully distressed look (if only braids could naturally appear this way when tousled).

Why not mix different styles? You can blend boho braids with Fulani braids over traditional single braids. This combination not only looks fantastic but also keeps your hair neatly away from your face.

Boho Braids

Half-head Cornrows & Boho Braids (Left)

A simple half-head of cornrows can beautifully transition into boho braids at the back, as demonstrated by Stella from Flo. We also included the rest of the group, featuring Renée (center) with boho locs and Jorja (right) sporting classic boho braids with wavy accents.

And remember, length isn’t a requirement. This boho braid bob is incredibly charming. While the full curly lower half may initially resemble pick-and-drop or goddess styles, a closer look reveals curly strands emerging from higher up the hair.

This style utilizes only the client’s natural hair for the braids (instead of incorporating extensions), with curly extensions woven in. The outcome is a set of delicate, soft, nearly micro-braids that exude a natural, earthy vibe.

Incorporating a variety of colors enhances the depth and dimension of the braids, making the hues stand out vibrantly. This particular set features warm biscuit shades and light blonde tones to achieve a beautiful ombre effect.

This charming blonde style pairs perfectly with the curly sections, culminating in a relaxed finish with loose hair. On this occasion, voluminous honey-blonde spirals define the look.

Boho Braid Space Buns

There are numerous creative ways to style your boho braids. The loose strands contribute significantly to updos, such as Marsai’s boho braid space buns.

Face Framing Boho Braid Up-Do

Alternatively, she utilizes the loose strands as face-framing tendrils in this stunning red carpet appearance.
